Luxembourg food safety authorities have recalled the Nestlé Cerelac biscuit cereal after it was found to have been contaminated by Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

800g boxes of Nestlé Cerelac biscuit cereal (“Céréale biscuitée pour panade de fruits) with the lot number L-70740291 and expiry date 07/2018 have been affected and withdrawn from sale, but some of the stock has already been sold in Luxembourg.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of more than 100 different chemicals and are formed by incomplete combustion. Food can become contaminated via the environment (by PAHs in the air, soil or water) or during processing and cooking. Some of them are genotoxic carcinogens.

According to information from the RASFF system on the distribution of goods in Luxembourg, the Auchan, Cactus, Cora, Pall Center and Massen supermarkets were potentially supplied with the contaminated product. In addition, the product was distributed via Hanff Global Health Solutions and pharmacies were also potentially delivered. However, a wider distribution cannot be ruled out.
