Luxembourg’s population will exceed one million people by 2062 according to the latest projections from EUROSTAT, the European Union’s statistics agency, though the growth represents a fall in previous projections as a result of lower predicted net migration.

EUROSTAT projects that the population of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg will reach 1,066,377 people by 2080, a drop of more than 220,000 people compared to the projections made in 2013.

Compared to other European countries, Luxembourg’s population trend is characterised by a great demographic dynamism due mainly to international migration. The European Union would see its population virtually stagnate with a growth of 1.7% between now and 2080. 15 countries would even see their population decrease by then, including Germany, with a fall of 5.3%, and Italy at -11.5%. Lithuania is expected to see the highest fall, with a drop of 42.6%.

By contrast, Luxembourg’s projected population jump represents an 85% increase.

As of 1 January 2016, 576,249 people live in Luxembourg.
