Four companies in Luxembourg sought to benefit from partial employment measures for May this year, a drop of five on the previous month.

The Economic Committee, chaired by Francine Closener, secretary of state for the economy, decided favourably on all four applications, with the final decision on whether or not to grant this support to companies temporarily confronted with a difficult economic situation incumbent on the Governing Council.

For the companies concerned, it is expected that out of a total workforce of 606 employees, 188 will work on a reduced schedule. The expenditure payable by the Employment Fund for the month of May 2017 shall be €230,000 in the event that all the undertakings concerned benefit fully from the partial unemployment schemes granted.

At the end of the meeting, the Secretary of State for Economy, Francine Closener, noted the effects of an emerging broad economic stabilisation.

"The number of applications for the granting of partial unemployment that the Economic Committee is called upon to deal with is being stabilised at a very low level. We have now reached the pre-crisis level of autumn 2008 in terms of the number of applications submitted. This confirms the current economic situation in the Grand Duchy as well as the stabilisation of the economic outlook, especially for industrial enterprises," she said.

The Economic Committee also issued positive opinions in relation to two applications for exemption from taxation of voluntary dismissal indemnities pursuant to Article 115 (10) L.I.R. Relating to the eligibility of 74 persons in the undertakings concerned.

The next meeting of the Economic Committee is scheduled for 23 May 2017.
