Prime Minister Xavier Bettel is in Brussels today to attend the European Council taking place on 17 and 18 March 2016.

Chaired by President of the Council, Donald Tusk, the meeting will primarily discuss new measures to face the migrant crisis, as well as priorities for the European Semester 2016, for which the implementation of recommendations by country will be proposed.

On Friday, Turkish Prime Minister, Ahmet Davutoğlu, will join Heads of State and Government for a working session devoted specifically to cooperation between the EU and Turkey. Donald Tusk has described reaching decisions in respect of both EU and international law in this regard as "an absolute priority", stating that "the catalogue of issues to be resolved before [they] can conclude an agreement is long".

Ahead of the European Council, Xavier Bettel will be chairing a prepatory Benelux meeting bringing together his Belgian and Dutch counterparts, Charles Michel and Mark Rutte, and will also attend a meeting of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE).
