On Friday 20 May 2016, Luxembourg Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn joined his counterparts from Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands in a meeting of the founding countries of the European Union in Brussels.

The meeting enabled those present to continue the reflection initiated as part of the preparation of the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, with a view to strengthening the EU's internal cohesion by returning to the basic principles at the base of the European construction, whilst reviewing the current state of the EU and the primary challenges it faces.

Six months following the Valletta summit, the ministers held an extensive exchange of views on the external aspects of the migration issue. In the presence of the EU Special Representative for the Sahel region, the ministers discussed ways to improve the efficiency, coherence and visibility of the EU's action and address the root causes of migration whilst increasing regional stability.
