To coincide with the trade mission to Iran by Deputy Prime Minister Etienne Schnieder, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Luxembourg Jean Asselborn, welcomed to Luxembourg, Falah Mustafa Bakir, head of the department for external relations of the Regional Government of Kurdistan-Iraq.

The visit took place on Thursday 20 October 20,  and initial discussion between Jean Asselborn and Mr Bakir were focused on the situation in Iraq and Syria. Minister Asselborn welcomed the solidarity of the Kurdish Regional Government in hosting 1.5 million refugees and displaced people, including 250,000 from Syria. He assured Mr. Bakir that Luxembourg would continue to give humanitarian aid to displaced persons in Iraq.

Minister Asselborn also stressed the role of the Peshmerga in the fight against the so-called Islamic State. He particularly welcomed the Kurdish decision to support the efforts of the Iraqi armed forces in the liberation of Mosul, while respecting the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iraq.
