The Luxembourg City Tourist Office (LCTO) has released figures for the number of tourist contacts made during Pentecost weekend 2016, revealing a 1.28% drop compared to the same period of the previous year.

Between 13 and 16 May 2016, the LCTO recorded 9,903 contacts, compared to the 10,032 received during Pentecost weekend in 2015.

The contacts were based on three indicators, these being the number of visitors to the reception and information office in Place Guillaume II, down 19.36%; the number of participants enrolled in regular and customised guided tours, up 5.09%; and the number of visitors to the Bock Casemates, which increased 15.04%.

In terms of nationalities, those most commonly received at the reception and information office were found to be neighbours of the country, primarily German-speaking clientele, followed by those of French, Dutch and then Luxembourgish origin.

According to the LCTO, one of the key successes in the city's tourism remains the organisation of tours, with the number of participants enrolled in 99 guided visits (19 to the City Promenade; 3 to the Circuit Wenzel and 77 to customised tours) increasing by 5.09% to 3,282 people, against 3,123 people in 2015.

Progress has also been made in the number of entries to the Bock Casemates following the extension of the opening hours. From the Friday to Monday of Pentecost, 3,510 people explored this primary tourist attraction, increasing the figures from 2015 by 15.04%.

The flagship event of Pentecost weekend was the second edition of the Enjoy Luxembourg outdoor festival, featuring concerts, choreography and a combination of rap and hip hop videos. However, the weather was not on the city's side over the weekend and the balloon exhibition scheduled for Saturday had to be cancelled. One of the musical highlihgts was Andreas Kümmert und Band, whilst graffiti artist Sumo created a large format art piece on site.

The LCTO announced it was maintaining its optimistic outlook on the development of a growing economic sector.
