The sport of strongmen the world over, a hammer throwing competition will be held at Stade Boy Kohnen this Saturday, organised by the Luxembourg athletics club, CSL. 

Up to 50 athletes from all over the world, Including Greece, Malta, Ireland, Germany, France, Belgium, Italy are expected to take part in the event, organised in honour of the memory of two Luxembourgish hammer coaches, J.P. Kops and J.M. Reuter. 

Among the throwers taking part will be world #2 with the 5kg hammer, Christos Frantzeskakis, and world #7, Quentin Bigot, and Luxembourg’s own world champion in the Master’s category, Mireille Kosmala, will be competing at 14:00.

Young Irish talents have been invited to take part as well, including Brendan O’Donnell from Donegal, who will be competing in the Under-20 6kg completion. Killian Barry and Simon Galligan, will compete in the adult 7kg competition. 

Frenchman Quentin Bigot is expected to throw well over 70 metres on his turn, perhaps even 75, while Christos Frantzeskalis from Greece, who is described as “impressive to watch” by a fan of the sport, may very possibly throw up to 80 metres if he’s on form. 

The meeting takes place this Saturday 10 June at the far end of the field in State Boy Kohnen. It starts at 10:00 am while Men’s Hammer throw begins at 14:30.
