Founder of the Luxembourg Air Rescue (LAR), René Closter, has been awarded the prize for excellent cross-border cooperation from the foundation for the promotion of German-Luxembourg cooperation in the field of sciences for 2015.

René Closter received the award for the development of the Luxembourg Air Rescue, which was established as a non-profit organisation in 1988 to provide rapid emergency air rescue and the transport of intensive care patients.

"The LAR is the only air rescue organisation in the Grand Duchy," explained Boris Liedtke, chairman of the Foundation and Board of Deutsche Bank Luxembourg SA, which founded the prize in 1995 and has since awarded it eight times. "In addition, it flies rescue operations in the border regions of neighbouring countries. The LAR Cooperation has therefore successively built up and strengthened the border between Saarland and Rheinland-Pfalz."

He continued: "We are very pleased that there are people in the private sector, who on their own initiative save lives across European borders. With the Foundation Award we would like to further support the expansion of cross-border emergency rescue."

In order to support the Grand Duchy and the Federal Republics, the Deutsche Bank created the Foundation to foster cooperation between the two countries in all fields of science. This includes the promotion of research projects, the awarding of research grants and the organisation of conferences.

"I dedicate the prize I received today to all those who have accompanied me in recent decades," stated René Closter, President for the Luxembourg Air Rescue. "My true friends, my loyal employees. In short, all those who have conducted a breakthrough in our common dream. Without the support of these companions we would not have managed to push through the massive obstacles which existed at that time. For this I am grateful".

The LAR is financed by donations and contributions from its 185,000 members.
