2016 is proving to be a year of victories for Young Scientists in Luxembourg: for the third time this year, a Luxembourg team has returned with a medal - this time, Alexandre Burman and Pierre Klemmer clinched first place in Portugal, at the Youth Science Meeting in Lisbon.

Alexandre Burman and Pierre Klemmer, both aged 16, winners of the Jonk Fuerscher 2016 national competition in Luxembourg, won the top international award at the Portuguese event Youth Science Meeting, which was held in Lisbon from 24 to 31 July. Their project was awarded by a jury of researchers from more than 30 projects from Europe and Latin America.

Their work on "Polystyrolkonsum Arbeit von Molitor Tenebro" is based on an article published by Stanford University in 2015 which deals with polystyrene consumption mealworms.

They tried to replicate the experiment conducted by the researchers to observe whether this species - considered a parasite - could be used to produce a new polystyrene processing mode - currently non-recyclable and extremely polluting.

Their participation in the Jonk Fuerscher Contest was noticed, since they were presented with the "eSkills for jobs" prize by Mady Delvaux, Socialist MEP. It is through their support and commitment that the young people had the opportunity to participate in the Youth Science Meeting, and to win first place.
