On 10 October 2016, Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Xavier Bettel received the Medal of Honour drom the bar of Paris while giving a speech entitled “A new generation for Europe?”

During his speech, Xavier Bettel reiterated that the European Union is above all a peace project, highlighting that the EU has brought a peace which was previously unknown to the heart of the continent. For seven decades, there has been no more war across most parts of the European continent, and this is a rare situation in history. It is a situation which has led to unprecedented economic and social development.

PM Bettel added that the EU is also a union based on the common values of peace, freedom, human dignity, non-discrimination and solidarity. He also stated that “Changes in the world demand our ability to adapt and be innovative, but without condemning a system which has proven to work.”

During the conference, the president of the bar of Paris, Frédéric Sicard, gave the Luxembourgish Prime Minister the Medal of Honour of the bar of Paris for his engagement with European cohesion.
