A conference being held by the department for scientific and technical culture of the University of Luxembourg on Thursday 16 June 2016 will aim to highlight the devastating consequences of fossil fuels on the world's oceans.

Entitled "Sea Sick - The Global Ocean in Crisis", the conference will explain how the carbon dioxide being release into the air through the burning of fossil fuels is being absorbed by the ocean, reverting it to a more acidic, warmer and more oxygen-deprived dead zone state than it has experienced in millions of years.

The very structure of life in the ocean and, therefore, on the planet as a whole, is at stake. At the event, Canadian science writer Alanna Mitchell will be discussing her experiences examining the big picture around the world with professor of geophysics at the Univrsity of Luxembourg.

The conference will take place at 18:00 in room BS 0.03 of the Limpertsberg Campus of the University of Luxembourg, 162A avenue de la Faïencerie, 1511 Luxembourg.
