From 27 May to 15 September 2016, Banque de Luxembourg will open its headquarters at 14 boulevard Royal to the public for an exhibition entitled “The Art of Garden Design and its Crafts”, dedicated to the work of internationally renowned Belgian garden architect François Goffinet.

The Banque de Luxembourg has always been involved in the life of its host city; now, with its new exhibition, “The Art of Garden Design and its Crafts”, featuring François Goffinet, it continues its tradition of corporate sponsorship and contribution to the City of Luxembourg’s cultural life.

The creations of François Goffinet, the internationally renowned Belgian garden architect, range from small city gardens to large parks – both public and private – covering several hectares. His most famous works include the gardens at Badminton House, Longleat House and Leeds Castle in England, the Donald M. Kendall Sculpture Gardens at the PepsiCo world headquarters in New York, and more than a dozen squares in London. He has worked on gardens all over Europe and North America and was featured in a special report on the French television programme Des racines et des ailes, broadcast on the France3 channel.

This is the first time an exhibition has been dedicated exclusively to François Goffinet. It offers unparalleled insight into the work of a contemporary garden architect determined to nurture and perpetuate the traditional Art of Garden Design. Through multiple working documents (including models, photographs, watercolours, pencil drawings and “green books”, the true compendium of work performed), videos, images and full-scale installations, mainly from François Goffinet's own archives and collections, the exhibition reveals a meticulous creative process, down to the last detail. It is a process that requires an entire team of craftspersons working hand in hand: architect, historian, designer, perspective illustrator, botanist, landscape artist , sculptor, carpenter, ironwork artist and fountaineer. Like the conductor of an orchestra, François Goffinet coordinates their contributions, taking every detail into account, from existing architecture and new buildings to relief, plantings, textures, materials, colours and light.

The “Art of Garden Design and its Crafts”, which is open to the public, showcases the continual dialogue that takes place between the garden architect and the various craftspersons involved.
