On Saturday 27 May, ING installed a shop at Luxexpo in Luxembourg-Kirchberg for the 12th annual ING Night Marathon in Luxembourg; the wares included ING products such as watches, t-shirts, key chains, gym bags, headphones and more.

The initiative was a huge success. As a result, ING Luxembourg will donate all of the proceeds (€2,125) to Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières - MSF) Luxembourg.

Each step gets our patients’ hearts beating

The amount will be used to support the project to totally renovate the new MSF Bar Elias hospital in the Lebanon, with the installation of all the equipment, including biomedical, electrical and hydraulic facilities entirely shouldered by MSF.

Bar Elias is located 20km from the Syrian border and barely 50km from Damas. The town’s population has tripled since the mass arrival of refugees, accentuating further the socio-economic problems in this poor and neglected farming region.

Problems concerning access to care are huge both for basic care and, more seriously, for hospital care. Following discussions with Ministry of Health consultants, MSF has offered to open a hospital in Bar Elias addressing the most vulnerable as a priority.

Loyal to its principles, MSF is to take on all people that need care, whether refugees or the local population. The end-goal of this intervention is to be able to transfer management of the hospital with duly trained staff to the Lebanese Ministry of Health after five years of activity.

The new MSF hospital in Bar Elias is to provide hospital care to both adults and children: general and orthopedic surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics, intensive care services and the treatment of chronic diseases. Post-operational care is to be handled on an out-patient basis or in a physiotherapy department. A knowledge transfer programme with several Lebanese universities is also planned.
