On Sunday 29 April 2018, the first excavation of the Luxembourg pavilion for the EXPO 2020 in Dubai took place, in the presence of the Commissioner General of the Luxembourg Pavilion, Maggy Nagel, Luxembourg's Ambassador, Elisabeth Cardoso Jordão, Luxembourg Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates and Executive Director of EXPO 2020 Dubai Office, Najeeb Mohammed Al-Ali, and the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Economy, Étienne Schneider.

As the first country to formally confirm its participation in the 2020 World Expo in Dubai in October 2016, the Grand Duchy is also the first participating country to officially start the construction of its pavilion, under the theme "Resourceful Luxembourg". As part of the main theme of EXPO 2020 "Connect the spirits, build the future", the Luxembourg pavilion will be built in an architecture inspired by the Möbius ribbon and whose modernity, technicality and originality will reflect the capacity Luxembourg to reinvent itself and its desire to focus on sustainable growth while respecting natural resources.

During the ceremony Minister Schneider said "Dubai is the first Arab city in the world to host a world exhibition that aims to welcome more than 25 million visitors. Therefore, the Grand-Ducal participation in EXPO 2020 Dubai is a unique opportunity to raise awareness of Luxembourg with all its strengths on the international scene and in particular in the Middle East. With both its content and its structure, the Luxembourg Pavilion aims to stimulate the imagination of visitors by focusing on quality of life, innovation and sustainable development."

Najeeb Mohammed Al-Ali, Executive Director of the Expo 2020 Dubai Office said: "We congratulate our friends from Luxembourg for being the first nation to take this important step towards EXPO 2020 in Dubai."
