German police are on the search for two lions, two tigers and a jaguar that broke out of their cages in the Eifel Zoo in the Rhineland-Palatinate in western Germany, at Lünebach in the district of Bitburg-Prüm, which is located just 20km from the border with Luxembourg - it is around 25km east of Weiswampach in the north of the Grand Duchy.

The police have already shot dead a bear that had also escaped, and they believe that the five big cats are still on the grounds of the zoo which houses over 400 animals. Nevertheless, residents are being advised to stay indoors.

It is understood that overnight thunderstorms in the region caused flooding at the zoo which contributed to the escape of the animals.

Update: the five big cats were recaptured after drone technology was used to scour the grounds of the zoo to locate them. All animals are now understood to be safely back in their enclosures.
