(L-R): Jean Asselborn; Antonio Gutteres, during a previous visit to the UN headquarters;

Luxembourg's Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn, will pay a working visit to the United Nations Headquarters in New York tomorrow, Monday 9 July 2018.

Minister Asselborn will participate in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) open debate on the plight of children in armed conflict. The debate organised by the Swedish Presidency of the Council will be informed by the annual report of UN Secretary-General António Guterres on children and armed conflict. It will address both the results achieved and the priority actions to be taken to stop and prevent serious violations against children in armed conflict.

In 2017, the UN has confirmed at least 6,000 violations committed against children by government forces and more than 15,000 violations by non-state armed groups.
The participation of Minister Asselborn in this public debate testifies to the importance that the Grand Duchy continues to attach to this issue, while the protection of children affected by armed conflict was one of the priorities of Luxembourg during its first term to the Security Council in 2013-2014.

During his working visit to the United Nations in New York, Minister Asselborn will also meet with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for International Migration, Louise Arbor. The discussions will address the role of the United Nations in migration, focusing on the negotiation of the Global Compact on Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, scheduled for adoption in December 2018 in Marrakesh.
