On 26 and 27 September 2018, Luxembourg Prime Minister and Minister of State Xavier Bettel participated in the 73rd UN General Assembly and the One Planet Summit in New York.

On the occasion of the general debate of the73rd UN General Assembly, Prime Minister Xavier Bettel delivered a speech yesterday evening.

In addition, Xavier Bettel participated in the One Planet Summit, an initiative to accelerate the implementation of the Paris agreement on the fight against climate change, by putting finance at the service of climate action. Organised jointly by the President of the French Republic Emmanuel Macron, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, President of the World Bank Jim Yong Kim and Michael Bloomberg, UN Special Envoy for Climate Action, the summit gathered all the leaders and decision-makers involved in the fight against climate change.

This second edition of the One Planet Summit illustrated how high-level institutional decision-makers and citizens can act together to mitigate the effects of climate change and build a common future. The event addressed three issues: sharing solutions for local, national and global climate action, investing in the transition to resilient and inclusive economies, low emission levels and protecting vulnerable populations.

The Luxembourg Prime Minsiter stated at the meeting: "We do not know precisely the role of humans in global warming, nor the role of the latter in climate change, but we have the facts, which month after month, year after year, tell us with certainty that we must act, that we are responsible for future generations." He also emphasised Luxembourg's full commitment to the Paris agreement, stating: "Luxembourg has taken several important initiatives to reorient international financial flows towards more sustainable investments and to play a major role in the field of green finance."

Xavier Bettel also used the occasion as an opportunity to discuss with many heads of state and government of the 193 UN member states, as well as take stock of bilateral relations, address major international issues and meet with representatives of the economic world.
