On Wednesday 13 February 2019, Luxembourg's Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel, visited Berlin to have talks with the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel.

Xavier Bettel and the German head of government discussed, among other things, the future of the European Union and the imminent withdrawal of Britain from the EU, as well as the possible consequences of Brexit for the EU and the Member States.

Prime Minister Bettel pointed out that it is not too late to find a solution for an orderly exit and thus to prevent a no-deal. "My country will make every effort to find a deal. However, the ball is currently clearly in London," underlined Prime Minister Bettel, pointing out that Luxembourg is preparing for all scenarios. "The exit agreement, which is still on the table, is the result of lengthy negotiations. It is the best possible outcome to ensure an orderly exit from the UK and has been endorsed by both the EU 27 and the UK governments, including the back-stop rule" reminded Prime Minister Bettel.

The Prime Minister added that for Luxembourg, the integrity of the single market and the level playing field are very important. "Despite all the discussions about Brexit and migration, we must keep a clear view on the long-term structure of Europe," the prime minister warned during the meeting with the Chancellor.

"If we speak with one voice to one voice, we will achieve more in a world order characterised by globalisation, and national special ways are wrong paths." said Prime Minister Bettel.

Subsequently, he visited the Fraunhofer-Institut für Produktionsanlagen und Konstruktionstechnik IPK (Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology IPK) and in particular the Berlin Centre for Digital Transformation, where he exchanged views with the heads of artificial intelligence, digital networking and automation technology.

Tomorrow, Thursday 14 February 2019, Prime Minister Bettel travels on to Madrid for a two-day visit where, among other things, he will have an audience with His Majesty King Felipe VI and he will also have a meeting with his Spanish counterpart, Pedro Sánchez.
