Luxembourg City will be opening a new community garden in the Grund district.

The capital will open a new community garden in Grund, located at the intersection of Rue Saint, Rue Saint Quirin and Rue de Prague, allowing residents wanting to grow their own flowers, fruits and vegetables together with their neighbours to participate in the project, regardless of their age or level of gardening experience.

With a surface area of approximately 180m2, the Grund community garden will have seven vegetable boxes, a garden shed, a picnic bench and a compost bin. Unlike the city’s other community garden projects, the Grund Garden's infrastructure will be entirely built by the participants themselves, in close collaboration with an experienced Natural Heritage Services woodworker. The timber, made available by the city, will come from communal forests, certified FSC, and will be treated by the application of a linseed oil resulting from the cultivation of linseed, a pilot project of the Service des eaux and Chambre de l’agriculture. Garden maintenance and plant cultivation will be the joint responsibility of all project participants.

In order to better protect the environment and to allow the project to run smoothly, Luxembourg City has defined some rules of conduct. Thus, the garden will be grown according to ecological criteria, without pesticides, chemical fertilisers or genetically modified organisms, and rainwater collected in the garden will be used for watering plants. An experienced moderator will accompany the gardeners during the first year in defining common tasks and creating a group structure. Theoretical and practical courses in ecological gardening will also be offered to participants.

An information meeting will be held on Saturday 5 May 2018 from 11:00-13:00 on the site of the future community garden.

Interested persons can register on site or online via a form that will be available on the Ville de Luxembourg’s website from 7 May (jardinscommunautaires.vdl.lu). To ensure a certain mix, the selection of candidates will be made according to the criteria already defined by the city for other community gardens, namely the age of the participants, family structure or experience.

The administrative management of the project will be ensured by the Stadtgrund trade union until the creation of an association by the group of gardeners.
