Lëtzebuerg an den Eischte Weltkrich;

On the occasion of the centenary of the end of the First World War, the Clervaux municipal administration is organising an exhibition entitled "Lëtzebuerg an den Eischte Weltkrich" at the Hall polyvalent on route d’Eselborn in Clervaux from 10 May to 24 June 2018.

The exhibition is sponsored by Käerjeng Municipality and was presented by the Claus Cito Cultural Circle from 24 May to 24 June 2017 and attracted more than 13,000 visitors.

The exhibition

The exhibition presents the war in Luxembourg, the reactions and the sufferings of Luxembourg citizens, and also the fate of Luxembourgish soldiers who fought in the ranks of the various armies.

On 1 August 1914, German soldiers of the 69th Infantry Regiment invaded the Troisvierges train station where they pulled up a hundred metres of rails. This is the first military act of the First World War and the beginning of a four-year military occupation of the Grand Duchy.

A number of Luxembourgers engaged and took part in the fighting such as the winner of the Tour de France François Faber, the famous photographer Edward Steichen, and Felix of Bourbon-Parma, the future husband of the Grand Duchess Charlotte.

The exhibition Lëtzebuerg an den Eischte Weltkrich traces the facts and consequences of the war for the Grand Duchy through some two hundred documents, photographs and short films that represent everyday life during the war years: the German military presence, efforts to maintain a policy of neutrality without too much success, supply problems and inflation, air attacks and their consequences, the founding of the Red Cross and the Luxembourg espionage networks.
