From January 2018, the price of all new lightweight single-use plastic bags in shops will increase from 3 to 5 cents.

Under the slogan "Please forget me", the goal of this price increase is to encourage consumers to limit their consumption of plastic bags and to encourage them to use reusable ones instead.

Lightweight plastic bags have a single or very low number of uses compared to those of reusable, thicker and more resistant bags, such as eco-bags. As a result, these lightweight plastic bags become waste faster and, because of their lightness, can more easily become litter-waste in the environment.

In order to contribute to the prevention of plastic waste, the law of 21 March 2017 on packaging and packaging waste requires a sustainable reduction in the consumption of lightweight plastic bags in Luxembourg. As of 31 December 2018, no lightweight plastic bags have been provided free of charge in the stores. The old lightweight plastic bags at a rate of 3 cents will be available at the tills of each store until the stock is depleted. The transition will be done gradually in the various stores of the country.

Moreover, the new visual on lightweight plastic bags highlights the "Please forget me" message, encouraging consumers to change their habits by limiting their consumption of plastic bags. Reusable bags such as the eco-bag offer a cheaper, more ecological alternative. In Luxembourg, since the introduction of the eco-bag, the use of approximately 829 million single-use lightweight plastic bags has been avoided.
