16-29 and 65-74 Year Old Residents among Happiest in Luxembourg

In 2016, the level of life satisfaction in Luxembourg was found to be 7.5 on a scale of 0 to 10, with residents aged 16-29 and 65-74 being the most satisfied.

According to a Statec study on the correlation between life satisfaction and age, the level of life satisfaction among Luxembourg residents averaged at 7.5 out of 10 in 2016. The adults surveyed reported an average score of 6.8 for their satisfaction concerning time spent on activities they enjoyed and a score of 5.7 for trust in others.

Residents aged 16-24 were revealed as the happiest in Luxembourg, followed by 25-29, 65-69 and 70-74 year olds- although life satisfaction scores dropped rapidly after this age, according to the study. Meanwhile, residents aged 50-54 reported the lowest scores for life satisfaction on average, with a major factor being income for 35-64 year olds.

Statec has claimed that there may be several factors behind these differences in life satisfaction observed between different age groups, namely sociodemographic factors. For instance, young and older people are satisfied with their lives because they spend more time on activities they like which in turn has a positive influence on their life satisfaction. On the contrary, people in the intermediate ages tend to have less time for such activities, with many balancing professional and family life.
