Alzette river pollution in Hesperange; Credit: Police Grand Ducale

On Sunday 20 May 2018, a stretch of the Alzette River is Hesperange was polluted, with the water turning a brown colour.

According to the Grand Ducal Police, a defective container of pet food leaked around 10,000 litres of a sugar solution in a farmyard. Despite the efforts of the farmer to clean the farmyard, some seeped into the river and was noticed at around 17:00. The farmer failed to notify the authorities.

Thanks to the good cooperation between the police and the Water Management Office, the source of pollution was identified. The Public Prosecutior ordered water samples to be taken for analysis over the coming days.
