Cyanobacteria or "blue algae" has now spread to parts of the Moselle River in Luxembourg.

Cyanobacteria, also known as "blue-green algae", have been found in different places along the Moselle River, especially in slow traffic areas. The presence of such bacteria is normal in these waters but, under certain conditions, they can develop excessively and form coloured carpets (blue-greenish colouration). Under these conditions, such bacteria can produce toxins that can cause health problems for humans and animals. These problems depend on the amount of toxins absorbed but include skin irritations, headaches, nausea, gastroenteritis, cramps, paralysis or liver damage.

The exact cause of this excessive proliferation is not known, but often results from an inadequate supply of nutrients for these bacteria, in the presence of a high water temperature.

It is therefore recommended to avoid contact with water where these coloured carpets are present (ie avoid swimming and water sports) and avoid swallowing this water. This recommendation applies to both humans and animals.
