Luxembourg city library;

The Ville de Luxembourg has announced that the city library will be closed to the public from Tuesday 28 August 2018 until Monday 17 September 2018 for renovations and redevelopment.

The city library, located at 3 rue Genistre - just off the Place d'Armes - will be modernised to improve the premises and services and better meet the needs of users. During the period of closure, only access to electronic resources and e-books will be maintained. To avoid inconvenience to members of the public, loans currently in progress will automatically be extended by 4 weeks from 28 August: those concerned are therefore requested to return the borrowed documents before 28 September 2018.

Increase in the number of workstations

The planned work will consist of refreshing the flooring and appliying a new coat of paint. In addition, the expansion of reading rooms is a major change that takes into account the growing demand from the public. After the redevelopment, the ground floor will accommodate 10 workstations and 5 Internet-enabled workstations; At level -2, the number of workstations will be increased to 25. As of mid-September, the city library will have a total of 35 workstations and 5 Internet-enabled stations, compared with 19 workstations and 12 Internet-enabled workstations at present. Since January 2016, the city library also has free wifi access which is available to visitors on all floors of the library.

New artistic decoration

From an aesthetic perspective, the large bay window overlooking Rue Genistre will be equipped with sliding panels in the "multiplicity" colours. These panels will increase not only recognition of the building using the visual identity of the City of Luxembourg, but will also provide sun protection inside the library, while ensuring sufficient natural light. Also, the work "Particles", an assembly in human form by the artist Michèle Tonteling will be set up within the Cité Bibliothèque, located at the main staircase leading to the lower levels of the library.
