Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel today visited the Bertelsmann headquarters in Gütersloh.
In his capacity as Minister of Media and Communications, Xavier Bettel held talks with Thomas Rabe (Chairman of the Executive Board) and Christoph Mohn (Chairman of the Supervisory Board) as part of his visit to the Bertelsmann Corporate Centre. These talks focused on strategies such as digitisation, data processing, data protection and the opportunities and risks of artificial intelligence developments.
Following the visit to Gütersloh, the Prime Minister emphasised RTL Group's key importance for the Luxembourg media hub: "Today, we are a hub in the media and communications arena, and the presence of RTL Group in Luxembourg gives us a credibility advantage. It is now important to prepare for the next important stages in this area, and the government will therefore continue to invest consistently in infrastructure, research and the bundling of competencies in the digital sector".
In Gütersloh, Xavier Bettel also met the chairman of the shareholders' meeting of the Bertelsmann Management Company, Liz Mohn, and Bertelsmann Foundation's CEO, Aart Jan de Geus, to discuss current projects. Among other things, they discussed the question of how sustainable democracy is in the globalised world, a matter that was also the focus of the 17th Salzburg Trilogue, which took place under the auspices of the Bertelsmann Foundation at the end of August.
Finally, the visit saw the signature of an extension of the concession agreement between RTL Group and the Luxembourg government. This addition to the existing contract, which renews the public programming mandate for radio and television in Luxembourg for the period from 2021 to 2023, will be extended to RTL Luxembourg's digital platforms. The aim of this expansion is to take into account the constant change in media consumption habits and to offer a wide range of high-quality content for the widest possible audience.
