In the early hours of Saturday 13 October 2018, an elderly motorist lost his life in an accident on the A4 motorway.

The accident happened shortly before 07:40 when a car was reported going the wrong way around the Raemerich roundabout before entering the A4 motorway and then turned off for Esch-sur-Alzette. A few minutes later, at the Esch-Centre exit, in the fast lane, it collided head-on with a car heading towards Raemerich.

Due to the impact of the accident, both drivers were trapped in their cars and had to be extracted from their vehicles by the rescue services. The driver, who had been driving along the A4 in the wrong direction, died some time later at the scene of the accident.

The accident victim is an 88-year-old man from the south of the country.

The driver of the second car was taken to the hospital for treatment after being released from her vehicle. Traffic was temporarily stopped during the rescue operation.

Subsequently, one lane was re-opened to traffic.

A forensics examination was carried out at the scene of the accident and an accident investigation was launched.
