The price of sending letters from Luxembourg will increase as of 1 May 2019.

POST Luxembourg has announced plans to adjust its rates for letters and parcels by 1 May 2019. Whilst the prices of letters will increase, those of parcels are set to decrease in the coming months.

From 1 May, it will cost on average 10 cents more to send a standard letter from Luxembourg. This rise affects both individuals and businesses. POST Luxembourg has attributed this revision of its tariffs to an annual drop in the volume of mail by around 5%. This is namely a result of letters being increasingly replaced by emails. Therefore, maintaining distribution costs will lea to a fall in sales and loss of profits for postal companies across Europe. Between 2013 (155 million) and 2017 (133 million), around 22 million fewer letters were distributed each year at POST Luxembourg alone.

Consequently, the price for a standard letter of the first category XS (up to 50 grams) will increase by 10 cents to 80 cents for national destinations, €1.05 to other European destinations and €1.40 for all other destinations from 1 May 2019. In addition, the price for registered mail, which has remained unchanged since 2010, will rise from €4 to €5.

Meanwhile, prices for sending parcels will decrease as a way for POST Luxembourg to support a fast-developing market, e-commerce and promote parcel shipping from Luxembourg. The price for shipping XL-parcels (up to 10 kg) will thus drop by €1.20 to €7.20, the price for shipping XXL-parcels (from 10 to 30 kg) nationally will drip by 90 cents to €9.60. These two formats continue to benefit from additional insurance options, shipment tracking and signed delivery.

The current stamps remain valid until 1 May and can be used later with additional postage. The new stamps will be available from this date onwards through POST Luxembourg's existing distribution channels.
