At the recent Global Light Rail Awards, two Egis projects received distinctions in the category “Project of the Year over €50m”: the Luxembourg LRT topped the category, while the Nice LRT received the “highly commended” accolade.

Luxembourg LRT: an innovative service, already in operation

Since 2015, Egis has been the lead firm in the design and construction supervision consortium appointed for the Luxembourg LRT line, supporting the project owner LuxTram in its construction.

This tram line is a truly multimodal route, connecting with bus stations (city and regional), passenger rail services, car parks and the funicular railway. By 2021 the line will extend north to the Luxembourg-Findel airport and south to the national Cloche d’Or football and rugby stadium.

The Egis teams rose to the challenge of meeting the 10 December 2017 deadline for the commissioning of the first line section, much to the satisfaction of LuxTram (the project owner) and its shareholders (City of Luxembourg, central government).

On this occasion, and following less than three years of design work and construction, Luxembourgers were able to witness the commercial launch of the first 4 km stretch of section A of the Luxembourg LRT line.

On 27 July 2018; three further stations were opened which use an innovative catenary-free system. The tram line runs for a total of 3.6 kilometres without overhead lines, powered by ground-level flash charging (trams power up while idling at the station).

Trams now run a daily service starting at 04:42 between LuxExpo and Place de l’Etoile and calling at 11 stations including three interchange hubs connecting with buses and passenger rail services. These first line openings in the districts of Plateau du Kirchberg, Limpertsberg and the city centre provide a connection between residential neighbourhoods and a major part of Luxembourg’s economic activity and the European institutions.

Global Light Rail Awards

The Global Light Rail Awards are a prestigious and well-known industry event in the UK and Europe. They are a celebration of innovation and excellence in the light rail sector, each year distinguishing the best projects in around ten categories. This year, more than 120 entries were evaluated.

These two awards pay tribute to the remarkable commitment of Egis’s teams who have once again demonstrated the extent of their skills in major urban development projects. They will also contribute to building awareness of the Egis brand in the UK, where the Group is currently working on the Midland Metro extensions in Birmingham.
