This past Wednesday, refugees housed in Caritas-run shelters planted trees in their homes as a symbol of their desire to take root in Luxembourg.

The symbolic tree-planting took place on the occasion of World Refugee Day 2018 and as part of the international "Share the Journey" campaign.

Although it is not the season to plant trees, the refugees took part anyway to show not only that they are aware of the difficulties they will have to overcome in order to integrate into Luxembourg society, like a tree planted at the beginning of summer, but also that they will put all their efforts into this, like a gardener.

One Syrian refugee and mother of two, living in a Differdange shelter managed by Caritas Luxembourg, commented: "The tree is a symbol of life. Today, by planting this tree, we wish to show that our life has begun again here, after many difficulties, and we wish to give hope to all the refugees who will come after us in this home. Life is starting again."
