This week, Marta Hughes, board member of SOS Villages d’Enfants Monde, will participate in the Chimborazo Challenge, to aim to reach the furthest point from the Earth’s centre to raise funds for SOS Children’s Villages in Ecuador.

Chimborazo tops out at 6,310m, almost 2,600m lower than Everest. That is only compared to sea level though. When taking equatorial bulge into account, Chimborazo sticks more than 2,000m further into space than any of the Himalaya peaks do, since they are located thousands of kilometres north of the Equator.

The expedition will include climbing Rucu Pichincha (4,784m), Rumiñahui (4,721m), Illiniza Norte (5,126m), Cotopaxi (5,897m) and Chimborazo (6,310m). Two others will be part of this expedition, Juliana Garcia, the first internationally certified female mountain guide in Latin America and photojournalist Simon Sticker.

Those interested will be able follow this expedition on Facebook (#ChimborazoChallenge) and Instagram, as well as Journi, or via https://chuffed.org/project/chimborazochallenge. Further information is also available on Juliana Garcia's website: https://www.explore-share.com/mountain-guide/juliana-garcia.
