Bee Together is organising the event “Bee active - Working to create biodiversity havens”, taking place on Saturday 24 February 2018 from 09:00-13:00 at Erpeldange-lez-Bous.

This Saturday, Bee Together will be working with additional volunteers to help the Commune of Bous to prune some of the branches of the willow trees in the Erpeldange-lez-Bous area. This pruning method is referred to as pollarding. By pollarding the willows, the trees, often hollow, are less likely to collapse under the weight of their branches.

This pruning often results in niches being formed that benefit numerous creatures, such as birds, small mammals, and insects, and the growth of mushrooms, mosses, and lichens. The hollows can be useful habitat for bats and honey bees.

In spring, the willow trees are one of the first plants to bloom, providing food (pollen and nectar) for pollinators, such as honey bees and bumblebees. Their roots stabilise the banks of streams, give a structure to the landscape, and have a positive effect on climate and air quality.

Families wishing to participate are advised that this activity is better suited for children 10 years old and older and children must be accompanied by a parent. Dogs, supervised by their owners, are welcome.

Participants should wear weather-appropriate clothes and, ideally, hiking boots with a good grip,  (gardening) gloves, and are advised to bring at least 1-litre of drinking water, a hot drink and a change of clothes.

The event will be followed by lunch in a nearby restaurant. Those wishing to join for lunch should let the organisers know in advance.

Reservations should be made on or before Thursday 22 February via https://www.eventbrite.com/e/bee-active-working-to-create-biodiversity-havens-tickets-43271152181. Details of the meeting location will be sent to those who register.
