As part of its attempts to encourage sustainable growth, Diekirch will see the redevelopment of its old military garrison into housing and shopping facilities.

The City of Diekirch aims for sustainable growth, both economically and in terms of inhabitants. In this context, the transformation of the former barracks into a multi-functional site, dedicated mainly to housing, but also shops, cultural and administrative institutions, forms part of this desire for development.

Marc Hansen, Minister of Housing, and Claude Haagen, Deputy Mayor of the City of Diekirch, today presented the progress of work for this new district which will be located in the city centre. Based on a reassessment of the attractiveness of the site, it is planned to increase the number of dwellings from 150 to 180.

In order to avoid creating a closed neighbourhood, it is planned to take advantage of the central location of the site, in parallel with its location in a natural recreation area, to develop an area with mixed functions, but dedicated essentially to the habitat. In fact, the old barracks is located near the centre of Diekirch and is bounded on the north (Rue Clairefontaine) as on the south (pedestrian/cycling link along the Sûre) by rows of trees. Thus, the new district will include a pedestrian shopping centre directly connecting the centre of Diekirch to the Sûre, shared collective spaces and a public space along the Sûre.

The privileged connection of the new district with the Sûre will be highlighted by connecting it to a promenade along the shore, aiming to take advantage of the natural elements to enhance the entire neighbourhood. The planned template will be appropriate to the existing urban fabric.

The PAP (Special Management Plan) for this project will start in September 2018.
