Children across Luxembourg will celebrate the country’s multilingualism during the European Day of Languages on Monday 26 September 2017.

Launched in 2001 by the Council of Europe, the initiative aims to promote language learning and multicultural awareness in Europe. As is the case every year, the Luxembourg Ministry of National Education, Children and Young People has proposed language-related activities to celebrate the European Day of Languages as well as the linguistic diversity existing in Luxembourg schools and shelters.

Adopting the slogan "Schwätz mat mer" (“talk to me”), this year the European Day of Languages will encourage children to explore and use different languages to better understand one another.

Intercultural exchange is one of today's great challenges for democratic societies. However, the essential advantage of multilingualism is the easier understanding of the other: having the ability to speak or understand the language of another gives us a better chance of getting along with each other.

Luxembourg, a multilingual country par excellence, lends itself very well to the idea of this European Day of Languages, especially since it takes place soon after the start of the school year, when it is a matter for the classes and groups of children to get to know each other better.

More information is available at the website http://edl.ecml.at/ of the European Centre for Modern Languages (ECML), European Coordinator of the Day, which offers a wide range of activities to enable children to discover and benefit from their multilingualism.
