On Friday, Luxembourg's Minister for Sustainable Development and Infrastructure, Francois Bausch, together with the Mayor of Luxembourg city, Lydie Polfer, and aldermen from the city, officiated at the inauguration of anew cycle path connecting the public part of Parc Pescatore with Boulevard Robert Schuman.

While the official opening to the public is planned for the end of July 2017, the facility was inaugurated on Friday; some work needs to be compled prior to the public opening.

The cycle path will link the Pfaffenthal lift (Ville-Haute) and the Grande-Duchesse Charlotte bridge, and will extend the cycle path linking the Schuman roundabout with the Kirchberg plateau that was inaugurated by the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Infrastructures in May.

The cycle path follows the natural terrain through the wooded area of Parc Pescatore, mainly in the shade. In order to avoid steep slopes, parts of the embankment have been reinforced. In addition, the cycle path has been partly made of concrete and partly made of wood for the part at the head of the retaining wall, and is based on micropiles, to protect as much as possible the roots of the trees on site.

Due to its 2.8m width, which allows a mixed pedestrian-cyclist circulation, the cycle path and the pedestrian area are not separated.

The total cost of this project was €1.28 million which commenced last November and are due to be completed on 27 July.

After the new cycling route is put into service, the cycling network in the capital will be approximately 160 km in total length.
