On Wednesday 29 November, the Closing event of the sustainable mobility campaign “Biklio” which encourages cycling in Luxembourg, took place in the MUDAM in Luxembourg-Kirchberg,

LuxMobility invited cycling enthusiasts and users interested in soft mobility to the event of the campaign Biklio, a cycling application that was developed in the European research project TRACE and allows cyclists to track their routes and benefit from incentives of local partners.

Biklio Luxembourg was supported by the Luxembourg Cycling Initiative (LVI). In October and November 346 cyclists cycled to participating shops, which in return offered free or reduced price items or services. The partnering spots, including MUDAM, S-Cape, Tartefine, la Cave a Fromage and Vinotheca, provided incentives for users to participate in the cycling campaign through the use of the Biklio application.

Culture and Infrastructure

Patrick van Egmond’s (LuxMobility) introduction about cycling in Luxembourg underlined the need for establishing a bicycle culture in Luxembourg, to which the Biklio campaign contributes. Minister Francois Bausch highlighted that in 2005 cycling was only 1% of the modal split in Luxembourg while now, according to the latest numbers, between 5-6% of daily mobility is done by bicycle. Minister Bausch explained how the new bike infrastructure on the Kirchberg which will be inaugurated in December 2017 will further support this positive trend. The cycle lanes along the tram lines are designed to offer more cyclists direct and safe connections to the Kirchberg and the city centre.

Follow up Campaign is planned

Dr. Martin Kracheel (Luxmobility) presented the results of the Biklio Luxembourg campaign, which show the routes that cyclists take in the city as well as potential problem spots for bicycle use. The results are valuable for Urban planning and their implications as well as the campaign were discussed by the audience, who expressed their interest and support for such cycling initiatives. LuxMobility announced that, in 2018, a follow-up campaign to Biklio will take place in Luxembourg. Towards the end of the event Minister Bausch handed over a brand new Specialised Bike, sponsored by S-Cape, to Romain Mayer, the very happy winner of the Biklio Luxembourg Campaign. New collaborations and projects about cycling were initiated and we are already looking forward to better cycling in Luxembourg in 2018.
