On 18 September 2018, a cycling study was presented for the South Region and the GECT Alzette Belval.

Luxembourg Minister for Sustainable Development and Infrastructures François Bausch, as chair of the GECT Alzette Belval, and the municipal authorities of the 11 communes of PRO-SUD and the EGTC, presented the first phase of the study of cyclability and future perspectives in the field of active mobility.

For years, the Luxembourg government has expressed its strong desire to promote active mobility through a national, intercommunal and cross-border cycling network. The development of such a "functional cycling network" therefore implies close cooperation between the municipalities concerned and the State, in order to jointly identify the needs and thus ensure the development of a coherent cycling network. It is in this context that the work of the "PRO-SUD" territorial-state cooperation convention is also located.

During the first half of 2018, the Dutch office TRIDÉE, which specialises in active mobility, worked on the issue of better cycling and proposed a functional diagram. Mapping the analysis, it presents the results of this study, which covers a large selection of roads in the South Region and at the Alzette Belval GECT. An interconnection of the Luxembourg and French cycling networks has also been taken into account.

The main objective of the study is to provide a "functional cycling network" for the South Region and the cross-border AggloSud in order to ensure efficient and safe daily trips for cyclists. The objective is not only to create recreational trails, but to promote the practice of active mobility in the context of daily commute to work. It is still necessary that the road network be arranged in such a way as to facilitate access to cyclists, even beginners. The interest of such a study is therefore also to assess the state of roads and improve the safety of the municipal network.
