On Friday 28 July 2023, Luxembourg's Ministry of Mobility and Public Works announced the temporary opening of a new 4.4km cycle path (PC21) linking Maulusmühle and Clervaux .

The “Vennbahn”, which connects Aachen to Troisvierges, is one of the busiest cycle routes in Europe; in 2015, planning began to extend this cycle tourism infrastructure to Clervaux. The project is divided into two phases.

The first phase is now open to cyclists for the period from 27 July to 17 September 2023 and connects Maulusmühle to Clervaux along the railway line, before passing on a temporary path through the Clervaux crossroads construction site. At 4.4 kilometers long, this cycle path allows cyclists to avoid mixed traffic on the CR334 and CR335.

Work on this first section, carried out by the Administration des Ponts et Chaussées in close consultation with the CFL, began on 10 May 2022. For safety reasons, cyclists are separated from the railway by a guardrail. From 18 September 2023, this section of the PC21 cycle path will again be temporarily closed in order to finalise the work to secure the rock walls, which will be completed by summer 2024.

On its second section, the cycle path will run alongside the railway line from Maulusmühle before going through Cinqfontaines, bypassing the railway tunnel to join the existing path that leads to Troisvierges. For the section bypassing the tunnel and accessing the convent of Cinqfontaines, classified as a national monument, authorisation requests from the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development and the Ministry of Culture are being prepared. The section along the railway line is under construction.

While waiting for the implementation of the second batch, cyclists will be able to reach Troisvierges from Maulusmühle by taking the CR373 to Sassel and then access Cinqfontaines via paved rural and forest roads.

In total, the new PC21 cycle path between Clervaux and Troisvierges will be 10 km long. The total budget is €8.5 million.

The opening of the Maulusmühle-Clervaux section will give an additional boost to cycle tourism in the north of the country and will offer a great opportunity for tourists and residents alike to discover this part of the Oesling by bicycle in complete safety. Likewise, as part of the fourth edition of Vëlosummer, cyclists will have the opportunity to discover the new cycle path via the “VeloViaNorden” circuit on the weekends of 5-6 and 12-13 August 2023.
