At its meeting on 26 March 2018, the Board of Governors of the University of Luxembourg made several important decisions on the institution's future.

Such decisions namely concerned the academic body and budgetary concerns of the University of Luxembourg.

Firstly, the Board approved the renewal of the mandate of Professor Björn Ottersten as Director of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (Interdisciplinary Centre for Security), which will now expire on 31 December 2023 rather than the end of this year. In May 2017, Prof. Ottersten was awarded a second prestigious ERC (European Research Council) Research Fellowship.

The Board also validated the opening of a position of Professor of Law specialised in capital market and post-trade at the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance (FDEF). Likewise, two other teaching positions have been approved at the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, Arts and Education (FLSHASE), one in social work and social pedagogy, the other in psychology with a focus on aging.

Regarding annual accounts and the budgetary framework of the university, the Rectorate and the Certified Auditor presented its audited 2017 accounts which were received favourably by the Board. As a result of the budget control and transformation measures put in place on 1 April 2017, the financial year ended with a positive result of €2.9 million. This amount will fund important infrastructure projects for the University.

Meanwhile, the 2019 budget framework was finalised by the Board, after being favourably advised by the University Council. This budget framework reflects the content of the Establishment Agreement 2018-2021. It will be transmitted to the Government before 1 April, in accordance with the Law of 12 August 2003 establishing the University of Luxembourg.
