Earlier this week, Grade 7 students from the International School of Luxembourg (ISL) debated women’s rights, child labour and drug trafficking at their International Forum.
On Tuesday 15 May 2018, Jean Asselborn, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, attended the ISL to open the International Forum, which saw students from Grade 7 (age 13) address solutions to critical current global issues and develop negotiating and debating skills. Students study five critical global issues and then serve as a country delegate on one of five committees which includes: women’s rights, child labour, drug trafficking, migration and nuclear non-proliferation.
The students represent that country's viewpoint and interest through a model United Nations style debate and the skills they develop are invaluable for their future careers, not only in politics, but in almost any field they choose.
The Director of ISL, Nicki Crush, said: “Our students already start learning about global issues in the Lower School through their exploration of the UN Sustainable Development Goals so they can begin to be truly global citizens who view the world not only with their own eyes but through the eyes of others too. It is imperative that they have global knowledge and are able to hold in-depth discussions on subjects including women’s rights, migration and nuclear non-proliferation for both their development and future life choices.”
