The Ministry of National Education, Childhood and Youth has announced the latest teacher recruitment statistics in Luxembourg for the upcoming academic year.

Primary teaching staff numbers have considerably strengthened. Most notably the amount of graduates recruited holding a bachelor's degree in Educational Science in 2018 far exceeds that of 2017. However, the recruitment of degree holders in relation to the objectives of teaching fundamentals who will undergo intense on-the-job training, will ensure better quality of teaching compared to the current practice of recruiting replacement teachers.

This staff reinforcement, in quantitative and qualitative terms, is the result of the effort that the Ministry has made in recent months to meet the recruitment challenges faced in primary education within the Grand Duchy.

222 candidates with a degree in Educational Science put themselves forward for the 2018 recruitment competition (30 for C1 cycle and 192 for cycles 2 to 4). They will begin their teaching careers as public servant-trainees in the autumn of 2018-19. Of these 222 candidates, 184 are recent graduates (compared to 91 in 2017) and 38 of them already have experience as supply teachers.

237 degree holders have been recruited as teachers (CDI) and will follow a on-the-job training programme organised at the National Education Training Institute (IFEN). Those who are successful in this programme will be able to apply to 2019 recruitment competition.

Of these 237 people, 92 have a Bachelor's degree in Education. 145 have a Bachelor's degree in relation to the objectives of basic education. The latter are graduates of psychology, pedagogy, youth work (29), languages (38), sports/art (22) or others (56).

Of these 237 participants, 46 already have teaching experience as supply teachers.
