This academic school year will see an increased number of highly qualified teaching staff working in Luxembourg schools.

For the 2018/2019 school year, the Ministry of National Education, Childhood and Youth recruited an increased amount of university graduates possessing a bachelor degree in education compared to the 2017/2018 period. Indeed, 184 new Bachelor of Science graduates were recruited in 2018 at the end of the recruitment competition compared to 91 in 2017.

Moreover, the Ministry successfully recruited the required number of teachers for school organisation in all schools in the country. Each class will have a staff member and all support courses and introductory courses as well as all other activities, including the replacement of long-term leave, will be provided from the outset.

In addition to the resources needed to ensure efficient school organisation, 146 people were assigned to the directorates of basic education to ensure daily replacements. In the event that daily replacements do not prove to be necessary, these persons will be at the disposal of the schools to support the classroom teachers in the care of their pupils.

Similarly, in accordance with the new law of 20 July 2018 establishing Centres of Competence in Specialised Psycho-Pedagogy for Inclusive Education, a multi-year recruitment plan has been drawn up to ensure the care of students with special needs. For the start of the 2018/2019 school year, therefore, the Ministry hired 101 additional staff at the local, regional and national levels.

All in all, the number of teachers and trainee teachers increased from 4,678 in 2017 to 4,951 in the 2018/2019 academic year.
