A total of €117.4 million worth of grants and €199.1 million worth of loans were awarded to students in Luxembourg during the academic year 2017/18.

On Tuesday 25 September 2018, Marc Hansen, Minister Delegate for Higher Education and Research, presented the state financial aid budget for higher studies awarded over the course of the last academic year.

31,174 students applied for state financial assistance, including 18,853 resident students and 12,321 non-resident students. €117.4 million worth of aid was awarded in the form of grants and €199.1 million in the form of loans.

Moreover, in 2017/2018, the preferred country of study for resident students was Germany (4,525 students), followed by Luxembourg (3,723 students) and Belgium (3,479 students). As in previous years, the foreign university cities most popular with resident students are located in a relatively close radius of the Grand Duchy, the most popular city being Brussels with 1,287 students. In terms of field of study, economics remained the subject of choice for students. Regarding the level of education, 12,734 resident students were enrolled in the first cycle leading to the "bachelor", 4,233 in the second cycle leading to the "master" and 302 in the third cycle leading to the doctorate.

Marc Hansen then presented the key figures of the courses leading to the BTS (brevet de technicien supérieur). In the 25 BTS courses offered in 2017/2018 in Luxembourg, there were 763 registrations.

With regard to the University of Luxembourg, 6,416 students from 122 different nationalities were enrolled during the academic year 2017/2018, which represents a virtually unchanged enrollment in comparison with the last three academic years.
