On Thursday 11 April 2024, Luxembourg's Ministry of the Economy published the latest results of efforts for March 2024 to reduce natural gas consumption in Luxembourg.

In March 2024, the reduction in natural gas consumption corresponded to approximately 27.8% compared to the reference period from 2017 to 2022, therefore once again on track to meet the gas demand reduction target of the EU Member States.

The voluntary gas demand reduction target of the EU Member States decided at the European level was 15%, while Luxembourg’s cumulative reduction in natural gas consumption corresponded to 26% between April 2023 and March 2024.

As a reminder, at the end of this second period of reduction in demand for natural gas, EU Energy Ministers adopted, on 4 March 2024, a recommendation to continue to reduce natural gas consumption by at least 15% compared to their average gas consumption during the period from 1 April 2017 to 31 March 2022, until 31 March 2025.

Luxembourg’s Minister of the Economy, SME, Energy and Tourism, Lex Delles, emphasised in this context: “I congratulate all stakeholders for helping to achieve and even exceed our natural gas reduction targets in Luxembourg. With a 26% reduction in our gas consumption, we are on a very good path towards a future less dependent on fossil fuels. However, in the context of multiple crises - war in Ukraine, without forgetting the climate crisis - it is now essential not to relax our efforts, and to continue to save energy. Everyone can contribute to this through small daily gestures.”
