In January 2018, the printing house Print Service Mechtel joined myclimate Luxembourg.

The Print Service Mechtel, located in Dudelange and Luxembourg City, has voluntarily chosen to offset all of its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by joining the non-profit organisation.

In a first step, myclimate Luxembourg has made a carbon inventory of the printing business, taking into account, among other things, the manufacture, transport and colours. As a result, the printing press has a global view of its greenhouse gas emissions from its activity.

In a second step, the printing company voluntarily offsets all its carbon emissions from its activity and therefore it is a completely climate neutral printing press. Through compensation, myclimate Luxembourg will invest funds raised in projects that meet very demanding standards. In addition to very strict criteria, this project contributes to SDG (Sustainable Development Goals).

Print Service Mechtel has decided to dedicate the funds raised via myclimate Luxembourg to a specific project, namely the production of electricity from FSC wood waste in the Amazon. This small-scale project is the first in the world to produce emissions certificates based on sustainably harvested biomass from a Forest Stewardship Council-certified (FSC) forest economy. The 9 MW power plant with wood chips is located in the Precious Woods sawmill in Itacoatiara, a small town in the Brazilian Amazon.

The positive effects achieved so far are the production of 414 GWh of renewable energy, the creation of 83 jobs created, the treatment of 964,000 tonnes of organic waste and protection against anaerobic decomposition. In addition, 121 million litres of fuel have been saved.

The primary goal is not to compensate, but to minimise the carbon emissions from its activity, following the principles of "Avoid - reduce - compensate" and "Do the best and offset the rest” alongside the experts of myclimate.
