Yesterday evening, Remich said its goodbyes to this year’s carnival season with its annual Stréimännchen festival.

Every year on Ash Wednesday, crowds march through the south-eastern Luxembourgish town of Remich around a straw puppet(“Stréimännchen”), before setting him on fire and dropping him into the Moselle river- a symbol of the end of carnival season.

The Stréimännchen festival traditionally takes place a few days before the Buergbrennen, a similar custom which marks the end of Winter and welcomes Spring. This year’s Buergbrennen festivals, which take place across the country, will be held on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 February.
