CinEast 2018 Awards ceremony: Astrid Roos at Grand Prix announcement;

At Friday evening's Awards Ceremony of the 11th edition of Central and Eastern European Film Festival in Luxembourg (CinEast) held from 4-21 October 2018, held at the Cinémathèque, the International Jury awarded the Grand Prix to the Hungarian film One Day by Zsófia Szilágyi and the Special Jury Prize to the Czech film Winter Flies by the Slovenian/Czech director Olmo Omerzu; the Jury also decided to award a Special Mention to the Bulgarian film Ága by Milko Lazarov.
The Critics’ Prize, awarded by the Press Jury, went also to the film Ága by Milko Lazarov. The Audience Award’s winner is the film The Other Side Of Everything by the Serbian director Mila Turajlić.
The International Jury of CinEast 2018 was composed of the director Bence Fliegauf (President of the Jury), actress Arta Dobroshi, director Govinda Van Maele, actress Astrid Roos and director and festival organiser Sergej Stanojkovski. The Press Jury was composed of journalists Claude Neu, Charlotte Wensierski and Loïc Millot. Astrid Roos commented the jury’s decision regarding the Grand Prix winner One Day as follows: “Daily life can be as breathtaking and suspenseful as an action thriller. Our choice of Grand Prix follows 24 hours in the life of a woman – mother of three and wife to a wayward husband. One Day puts motherhood center stage, a theme of extraordinary importance, yet seldomly portrayed in cinema.”
As regards the Special Jury Prize for Winter Flies, the jury member Govinda Van Maele said: “Within the well-trodden, familiar genre of the coming of age road movie, Winter Flies manages to stay daring and playful. It is fresh, rough at the edges – and very alive. Never quite sure where he is taking us, one can feel the searching, adventurous filmmaker behind the wheel – and as far as we’re concerned it was a pleasure to be huddled up on the backseat for this strange and beautiful ride.”
Claude Neu commented the Press Jury’s verdict related to the Critics’ Prize for Ága with these words: “The film kept our particular attention by its incredible elegance, its narrative capacity to tell us its story without being wordy, using a slow, relaxed and enveloping rhythm. The story of a couple living in total autarky, the esthetic observation of its rituals, their way of facing the fact of getting old, the sensible observation of their regrets, but also the joy of their daily life as their memories of the past. Even if the setting is quite far from our cultures or ways of life, we deeply understood and were intensively touched by the destinies and the utmost humanity of Nanook & Sedna.”
The film The Other Side Of Everything by Mila Turajlić received the best results in the votes given by the audience and is therefore the winner of the Audience Award. Finally, the Audience Awards for the Best Short Films were awarded to: A Siege by Isztván Kovács (fiction, Hungary), The Box by Dušan Kastelic (animation, Slovenia) and Vika by Marta Iwanek & Christian Borys (documentary, Ukraine/Canada).
The ceremony was followed by the screening of the film Just The Wind directed by the President of the International Jury, the Hungarian director Bence Fliegauf. The film One Day that won the Grand Prix will be repeated today, Sunday 21 October at 20:30 at the Cinémathèque Luxembourg.
