Set on bustling and noisy Coney Island, New York, in the 1950s, Wonder Wheel is the first of Woody Allen's collaboration with Amazon Pictures.

The story of complex relationships is set around Kate Winslet (Ginny) who, along with her second husband Humpty (Jim Belushi) work at the fairground, she as a waitress and he on the carousel. They both have children from previous marriages; her son Richie is a teenage pyromaniac, a storyline which hovers in the background, and 23 year-old Carolina (Juno Temple) who has returned to her father as the prodigal daughter. She had married at 20 and is now estranged from her husband, a gangster. As she cannot keep a secret, she has told the FBI about what she knew of his "business" dealings, and now "they" are out to get her.

Both Carolina and Humpty feel that Coney Island would be last place that the gangsters would look for her, due to her their previous falling out. They make up and she gets a job as a waitress and has plans to return to college.

Meanwhile, Ginny is having an affair with a lifeguard, Justin Timberlake (Mickey). Her character is quite neurotic, complaining of headaches and migraines, worrying about her son bunking off school, setting fires and getting into trouble. She and Humpty don't seem to have much in common and neither appears interested in what appeals to the other. She reminisces in roles as a one-time actress
Then Mickey and Carolina meet and appear to be attracted to each other...

A tale of shattered dreams, reckless love and betrayal, in which Kate Winslet shows off her tremendous acting talent, all helped somewhat by the wonderful script and great camerawork over long scenes. An amazing opening scene full of colour, lights, people and allure is the perfect start in which all the pieces fall neatly into place.
