Having been granted a Payment Institution (PI) license to operate in the European Union, bitFlyer becomes the first Bitcoin exchange to be regulated in Japan, the US and Europe, making it the most compliant virtual currency exchange in the world.On Tuesday 23 January 2018, Luxembourg's Finance Minister Pierre Gramegna officially announced that the Japanese bitFlyer platform was granted accreditation as a payment institution on 8 January 2018 by the Ministry of Finance.

During his recent mission to Japan, Minister Gramegna visited the premises of bitFlyer and met the CEO, Yuzo Kano. During a working meeting, Yuzo Kano presented the European strategy followed by the platform and underlined the interest it brings to Luxembourg. For his part, the Minister explained the benefits of the Luxembourg ecosystem for international FinTech operations.

Minister Gramegna commented "We are delighted that one of the most successful startups in Japan has chosen Luxembourg as an anchor for the European Union. This confirms the attractiveness of our country for the development of Fintech companies, a priority in the diversification strategy of our financial centre."
